WHY TUTORING?
You are not alone. An estimated 10% of all students have difficulty learning to read and spell. At Busy Bees Tutoring, we use Orton-Gillingham teaching methods. For example, the Barton Reading and Spelling System is a research-based, Orton-Gillingham reading intervention with nearly 20 years of effective results. In addition, we integrate Structured Word Inquiry to support students whose learning profile require something besides Orton-Gillingham.
Some reading interventions may promise years of growth in a matter of weeks. Sadly, this is a false promise. Reading is a complex process which involves cognitive, language, and learning processes. These issues cannot be magically erased.
True remediation takes skilled assessment and instruction, and usually requires months, and often years, to fully correct.
When we are learning a new skill, we invest our time, patience, and dedication into that new skill, whether it be playing the piano, learning to play a sport with excellence, or developing a creative talent.
For some students, reading also requires a long-term commitment to master. There are periods of fast, exciting growth with lots of evidence of progress. This is usually a motivating and enjoyable time. There are other periods of slower, more focused work, and the results are not yet clear. These times require a long-term view and patience. By putting in the time and effort, all of the hard work will pay off and result in fantastic progress for readers with dyslexia. With an individualized, aggressive, and systematic approach, students can learn the art of reading and become efficient readers and spellers.
Using a pace and system appropriate for your student, success is on the horizon!

How does it work?
First, we can conduct an individualized reading assessment to pinpoint the exact areas of weakness and fully understand your child's reading and spelling challenges.
Tutoring includes 55 minute sessions of one-on-one instruction with Amy. Detailed progress reports are provided each month to parents, along with upcoming goals. Optional modified spelling lists are provided for students at no additional cost.
Dyslexia remediation is a long term commitment. At Busy Bees Tutoring, we require a minimum of 2 sessions weekly for a total of 2 hours. Classic dyslexia generally takes 2-3 years of twice weekly sessions to remediate.
In addition, Amy will advise parents as to the appropriate level of book for your child to read at home, at the library, or in the classroom, as well as the strategies or changes that are needed to succeed in school while remediation occurs.
With an intensive, systematic, research-based approach, students with dyslexia will learn new skills they need to work with sounds and letters. Then, they will learn the concepts that unlock the code to reading, and the many nuances of English.
By putting these two systems together, students with dyslexia can become successful readers and spellers.
