What is barton?
The Barton Reading & Spelling System can improve the reading, spelling, and writing skills of any student with dyslexia or a suspected learning disability. This works for young children, teens, and adults.
It is scientifically-proven and research-based to increase a student's reading and spelling skills.
Barton is based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which presents lessons in a multi-sensory and highly-structured way. Students must master each skill before moving on to the next skill.
Best of all, it teaches students how to examine new words and understand how to eliminate guessing and truly identify the word.

How does it work?
Orton-Gillingham methods share similar characteristics, and Barton is no exception. Here's how it works:
-It's multi-sensory. We move around tiles. We draw in the air. We recite rhymes. We visualize. We sing songs. We color-code. Multi-sensory learning combines tactile, kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning in every single lesson.
-It's highly structured. Students with dyslexia often have hidden pockets of confusion along their path to reading. In Barton, we run a fine-toothed comb over everything, starting from the very beginning. We locate those weaknesses and fill in those gaps completely before moving on. Students must master the content from Level 1 before they can begin Level 2. The levels are designed to build new knowledge upon a solid foundation. This way, success is guaranteed. No more mysterious holes in your child's understanding.
-It's direct. Reading and spelling may come naturally to many children. But your child is different. We do not leave your child in the dark or expect them to guess at anything. We show them exactly how it works, and teach them how to know what the word says. Not just guess. Then, they develop the skills to figure out any word they come across.
-It's intense. Each and every new skill is repeated and practiced over and over until it is mastered. Old concepts are continually integrated into each lesson so that nothing gets forgotten. We stay focused on one concept at a time, all the way to the end.
-It's responsive. Students with dyslexia have become good guessers. We know the signs. We look for errors and patterns and adjust our pace and practice as we go. If your student has started to "coast" through their work by guessing, we will know it and pinpoint their real confusion. All errors are addressed, and nothing is overlooked.
